Wisbech organises cracking Covid alternative to traditional Christmas Fayre

Preparations are well underway to keep the spirit of Christmas alive in Wisbech this year.

The Wisbech Christmas Fayre is unable to go ahead in its traditional format this year due to coronavirus regulations, but organisers are still determined to spread some much-needed festive cheer – and have come up with a magical alternative to the usual one-day event.

The Fayre Committee is pulling together the ‘Wisbech Christmas Crackers’, an online calendar showcasing all the different festive events and activities due to take place in the town throughout December, subject to lockdown measures being lifted on December 2.

The idea is to open a cracker a day to highlight the many festivities happening in the town.

A number of events and activities are already featured in the calendar, including Wisbech Town Council’s ‘Countdown to Christmas’ markets on December 12 and 13 and from December 19 to 24, and carol singing from the Rotary Choir at Tesco, Cromwell Road, on December 17, 18 and 19.

And although there won’t be any sitting on Santa’s knee this year, children will still able to have a socially distanced chat with him and the Wisbech Lions on the following dates:

Saturday, December 5 – Morrisons
Friday, December 11 – Tesco, Cromwell Road
Saturday, December 12 – Tesco, Cromwell Road
Sunday, December 13 – Market Place
Friday, December 18 – Iceland
Saturday, December 19 – Iceland

There will also be a live festive food demonstration in the Market Place on December 12, and a town centre Shop Window Display trail competition. Youngsters will be invited to look out for crackers in shop windows, with letters which spell out a Christmas message. Entries will be entered into a prize draw.

And word is that Wisbech Town Council, while unable to put on a Christmas Light Switch-On Event, may also have something a little different planned for the big switch-on day.

Details of all the events featured in the Wisbech Christmas Crackers calendar will be posted on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/WisbechChristmasFayre

Anyone wishing to advertise an event/activity they are holding can add it to the calendar by messaging the Facebook page or emailing: marketsandevents@fenland.gov.uk

The Wisbech Christmas Fayre is one of Fenland District Council’s Four Seasons events, which are held in Fenland’s four market towns throughout the year and organised in partnership with town councils, local community groups, organisations and volunteers.

Cllr Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We are disappointed that the Wisbech Christmas Fayre can’t go ahead in its traditional format, but due to social distancing regulations we wouldn’t have been able to offer the special Christmas experience that visitors have come to love from the event.

“However, after such a difficult and challenging year, the Fayre Committee is determined to make sure people don’t miss out. Wisbech Christmas Crackers will enable people to enjoy a host of activities in a safe and COVID secure manner and spread some much-needed festive cheer.”

Terry Jordan, Clerk to Wisbech Town Council and Chairman of the Wisbech Christmas Fayre Committee, added: “In these unprecedented times, the delivery of creative and innovative solutions has succeeded in challenging the myth that “Christmas is cancelled”. It is excellent to see the amount of festive preparations throughout the Market Place and Wisbech as a whole.”
